Ruby on Rails vs PHP

I'm working on a geek project. To cut development time, I'm buying some off the shelf web software and modifying it instead of building the application from the ground up. The stuff I need is available in several languages including PHP (which I'm a whiz at) and Ruby on Rails (which i know NUTHIN about).

Did a search for 'ruby on rails vs php' and stumbled across these -

Pretty effin funny. And true at least about PHP. I do like the record handling they mentioned for databases. The app I'm working on is VERY database dependent.

Ok, so it's a framework more like J2EE. I hate J2EE. Overcomplicates really simple projects. This is not a simple program suite at all and I don't really know if a 3 part framework will help much.

The stuff about PHP is again spot on.

I'll be getting the Ruby on Rails version of the software. That means I'll be learning a new language/framework so I can do basic mods myself and better direct whoever I hire to write the mods that will take longer to code. This will up my programming languages to +14 if anyone is keeping track besides me. The Geek within me is strong.

Mafia Wars Notes

Started playing Mafia Wars on FaceBook. Below is a cut and paste of information and a few links I collected.

things of note
fighting - have over 500 mafia members, equip them with the best items available
leveling - bulk up on energy, try to get 2 xp for every 1 energy spent, don't worry about which jobs you do (only should do Bank Heist once available to level 100 and Settle A Dispute after level 100). if you have an energy pack waiting, do jobs less than 2:1 to complete job masteries. after you pop the energy pack, work on job masteries until your energy to xp needed to level is around 2:1 then go back to doing BH or SaD jobs.
main mafia - put highest level possible in each position for max bonuses and rewards. need a fearless wheelman and any mastermind high enough to give you 11% bonus (gives a 2.03:1 ratio of energy to xp on Settle A Dispute and a 2:1 ratio on Bank Heist). Also, get yourself into those positions on other accounts for additional bonuses.
property - just buy Mafia Mikes until you have around 500 of 'em. then do whatever with your cash. MM's are the best investment and can't be robbed. good cashflow is needed to cover cost on your equipment and you will have plenty.

everything else falls into place

pro-level tip
start some extra facebook accounts, level 'em to 100+ (with 500 members) and use them to farm required job items and drops from fights. send the items to your main account. equip these farm account's mafia with off the rack items (bonus weapon, body armor, and town cars) and send better stuff to your main.

once you get some mafia members you will get bombarded with group requests. join the MafiaWars related ones and post regularly to their wall that you need more members.

if you do this with your primary account, do not add your email addy to the mass email discussions, just request the ones who have their emails up be friends. otherwise you get mafia wars requests on your main facebook account forever. once they friend and join your mafia, you can delete from your facebook friends and they stay in your mafia.
